The real cost

A bad logo costs more than a good one.

01

Clients decide in seconds.

Research consistently shows that people form a visual impression of a brand in under 100 milliseconds. A logo that looks dated, generic, or inconsistent signals — before a single conversation — that the business behind it may not be worth taking seriously. That first impression is nearly impossible to undo.

02

Cheap logos get replaced.

Businesses that start with a cheap, off-the-shelf logo typically end up paying several times that amount fixing it two years later — once they realise it does not reproduce cleanly on print, does not work as a favicon, or simply does not reflect where the business has grown to. Getting it right once is cheaper than getting it wrong twice.

03

Your brand is not just a logo.

A logo is a mark. A brand is everything that mark gets attached to — your website, your packaging, your proposals, your email signature, your social presence. When those things are consistent and considered, they compound. When they are not, they leak trust at every touchpoint.

How we work

The brief is where most agencies cut corners. We do not.

  1. 01 Briefing

    The conversation

We start with a 30-minute call. Not to sell you anything — to understand your business, your clients, and the impression you need to make before we discuss anything visual.

  2. 02 Discovery

    Research

We study your industry, your competitors, and the visual language your clients already respond to. This shapes every decision we make from here.

  3. 03 Direction

    Concepts

Three distinct directions — each with a clear rationale. Not just pretty options, but a considered explanation of why each approach is right for your business.

  4. 04 Iteration

    Refinement

You choose a direction. We refine until it is exactly right. No round limits, no additional charges, no pressure to approve something you are not happy with.

  5. 05 Handover

    Delivery

Every file you will ever need — AI, EPS, SVG, PNG, PDF — organised, labelled, and yours to keep. No licencing, no ongoing fees, no small print.

GreenergyAir

HVAC · North Carolina, USA
The situation

GreenergyAir had been operating in North Carolina for years with a brand that looked like it was built in an afternoon.

What we did

We rebuilt their visual identity from the ground up — new mark, new colour system, new typography — then applied it across their website, vehicles, and marketing materials. The rebrand was part of a wider project that also included a new website, SEO, and Google Ads.

The outcome

Leads grew month on month from the point the new brand went live.

What we did

We developed a mark and identity system that balanced precision and warmth, with a colour palette that was genuinely distinctive in the sustainability space.

The outcome

The identity has been consistently applied across their digital and print presence since launch.

A direct point

AI can generate a logo in 10 seconds. Here is the problem.

AI · generic output 6 in 60 seconds
Designed for one business Dream Steps
Aurora · primary mark
One direction. Considered. Specific.

AI is trained on existing logos.

Which means the output always resembles something that already exists. In a market where differentiation is everything, a logo that looks like everyone else’s is not neutral — it actively works against you.

Template services have the same problem.

They start from pre-built shapes and font combinations that have been sold to thousands of other businesses. Your logo may be unique on paper, but it will feel familiar to anyone who has seen enough brands — and your clients have.

We start from scratch.

Every project begins with a blank file and ends with a mark that is specific to your business, your sector, and the clients you are trying to impress. That is not a longer way to get a logo. It is the only way to get a good one.

Frequently asked

Questions about logo and brand identity design.

How much does a logo design cost?

The cost depends on the scope, the depth of discovery, the number of concepts produced, and whether the logo is built as the seed of a brand identity or as a standalone mark. There are four credible bands you can buy a logo in — marketplace, freelance, agency, and top-of-market — each with different trade-offs around concept range, customisation, deliverables, and ownership. We work primarily in the agency band, where the price reflects three concepts, full discovery, and a logo built to extend into a system. We share a written estimate within two working days of the discovery call.

What's the difference between logo design and brand identity?

A logo is one element — the mark. A brand identity is the system around the mark: colour, typography, voice, imagery, iconography, motion, and the guidelines that hold them together. A logo project produces a mark and its core variants in about four weeks; a brand identity project produces a complete system in 6–14 weeks. The right choice depends on how many surfaces the brand has to live on and how mature the business is. We have written a full piece on this — Brand identity vs logo design — in our journal.

How long does a logo design project take?

A focused logo project takes four weeks of working time. The work is split across five phases: briefing (~3 days), discovery (~5 days), three design directions (~10 days), refinement of the chosen direction (~7 days), and handover (~3 days). The timeline can compress to three weeks with a decisive client and pre-prepared brief, or expand to six weeks with a larger review committee. A logo project that includes a brand identity system around the mark typically runs 8–12 weeks.

How many concepts will I see?

Three. Each presented as a developed direction — primary mark, lockup variants, colour set, type pair, an example application, and a one-paragraph rationale that ties the design back to the brief. Three is the working number because fewer feels like a forced choice and more dilutes the conversation. One direction is then chosen as the lead, sometimes with specific elements borrowed from a second direction.

What deliverables do I get at the end of the project?

A complete file package: vector files (SVG, AI, EPS) for design teams, raster files (PNG at multiple sizes) for non-design users, PDF references, a favicon, social media avatars at platform-specific sizes, light and dark variants, monochrome variants, and an app icon. A one-page brand guideline document is included with every focused logo project, covering clear-space rules, minimum sizes, colour values, and misuse examples. Full copyright transfers to the client on final payment, with a written statement.

Do I own the logo after the project ends?

Yes — full copyright and exclusive ownership of the final logo transfers to you on receipt of the final payment, with a written statement confirming the transfer. The source files (vector working files) are included in the handover. You can use the logo on any surface, in any geography, in perpetuity. Dream Steps may include the work in our portfolio and case studies unless you specifically request confidentiality, which we accommodate without additional fee.

Where in the world are your logo design clients based?

Across the UK, United States, Ireland, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, the UAE, and worldwide. Most of our logo projects are commissioned by founders, marketing directors, and creative directors in those markets. We work in your timezone, communicate entirely in English, and have senior team members available across UK and US business hours. The work itself is geography-agnostic — every logo we ship is designed for the specific market the brand is launching into.

Can you refresh an existing logo rather than redesign it?

Yes — a focused logo refresh takes 4–6 weeks and keeps the existing logo recognisable to current customers while updating its structure, weights, or system. We start every refresh engagement with an audit: a candid read on whether the existing logo is genuinely worth keeping (refresh) or whether a full redesign would actually cost the same and produce a better outcome. The audit itself is a paid but bounded engagement that gives you the right answer before you commit to the bigger investment.

What's the difference between hiring a freelancer and an agency for logo design?

A senior freelancer is appropriate for a focused logo project where one experienced person can hold the brief — a small brand, a single mark, no immediate need for the logo to extend into a wider identity system. An agency is appropriate when the logo needs to be the seed of a future brand identity, when multiple stakeholders are involved, or when the work has to live across many surfaces from day one. The rough threshold: if the brand will live on more than 10 surfaces in its first year, the agency band tends to produce a more durable result. Below that, a senior freelancer can absolutely deliver excellent work.

Can you work with an AI-generated logo as a starting point?

Yes, with one caveat. AI generators are useful early sketching tools — they are good at producing a starting shape from a few inputs in minutes — but the output is rarely a finished logo. The strategic fit, ownability, scalability across surfaces, distinctiveness from competitors, and integration into a brand system are all things AI cannot do yet. We are happy to take an AI-generated starting point into our process; what we ship at the end will be a deliberately designed mark, with the legal availability and strategic rationale a real logo requires.

How do I get started with a logo design project?

Book a free 30-minute discovery call. We will ask about the business, the brand stage (new vs refresh), the surfaces the logo has to live on, and your target launch date. A written proposal — scope, timeline, team, and price — follows within two working days. The project can usually start within a week of proposal sign-off. Book directly from the page or email info@thedreamsteps.com.
